Taiwan CDC: Fourth imported case of H7N9 avian influenza confirmed, second in a week

The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has confirmed another imported human case of H7N9 avian influenza from China travel, according a Focus Taiwan report today.

This is the fourth imported case since April 2013 and the second case reported in as many days. For more infectious disease news and information,visit and “like” the Infectious Disease News Facebook page.

The most recent case is a 39-year-old Taiwanese businessman who developed symptoms similar to that of H7N9 when he entered Taiwan on April 19, after traveling to Beijing and Kunshan in eastern China. On Wednesday, he was admitted to the hospital intensive care after an X-ray revealed a pulmonary infiltration. H7N9 AI was confirmed today.

This follows the third imported case detected on Tuesday, April 22, in a 44-year-old female from Nanjing, Jiangsu, China who traveled to Taiwan.

Taiwan confirmed its first and second imported H7N9 cases from China on April 24 and Dec. 31, 2013, respectively. Since April 3, 2013, a total of 581 suspected H7N9 cases have been reported in Taiwan, but only four have been confirmed, with the December case proving fatal.
