‘Star Wars The Force Awakens’: Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren detailed
The recent Entertainment Weekly gave fans a closer look at the key villain in the new Star Wars film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kylo Ren.
Kylo Ren is played by Girls star Adam Driver and is NOT his real name. Some are equating the “Ren” to “Darth” as the nomenclature taken by those worshiping and practicing the dark side of the force.
“He is a character who came to the name Kylo Ren when he joined a group called the Knights of Ren,” director J.J. Abrams explained.
Others are speculating that Kylo’s real identity will be linked to the offspring of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Harrison Ford’s Han Solo, who were revealed in the novels.
“I think that there are two sides to the Force. Both sides, arguably, would see themselves as the hero of their story,” says Abarams. “[Ren] is not your prototypical mustache-twirling bad guy. He is a little bit more complex than that, and it was a great joy to work with Adam Driver on this role, because he threw himself into it in a deep and remarkable way.”
So fans should NOT expect Dark Vader part two, but can rest assured that there are ties to the falled Jedi.
“The movie explains the origins of [his] mask and where it’s from, but the design was meant to be a nod to the Vader mask. [Ren] is well aware of what’s come before, and that’s very much a part of the story of the film,” Abrams explains.
That said, after the fall of the Galactic Empire at the end of Return of the Jedi a new faction called The First Order took its place. It is led by Supreme Commander Snoke (Andy Serkis) and General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson). Ren plays a part, seen leading Stormtroopers into battle in some of the images.
No matter how the details shape up, for now, fans are excited by the unique lightsaber, which Abrams confirms he made on his own lightsaber and “is as dangerous and as fierce and as ragged as the character,” Abrams says.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is directed by J. J. Abrams and stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow, with Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker reprising their roles from the previous films.
Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th 2015.
