‘Star Wars Episode VII’ will get ‘Star Trek’ director JJ Abrams
JJ Abrams may be taking over the famed “Star Wars” franchise with the first reboot, set for 2015.
UPDATE: Disney released a Jan. 25 statement confirming Abrams at the director for “Star Wars Episode VII”
“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Kathleen Kennedy. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”
George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”
The Wrap is reporting on Thursday that sources say Abrams will direct the next “Star Wars” film for Disney, taking stewardship of the Sci-Fi franchise.
Abrams’ name always came up, but he told Entertainment Weekly in November that he wasn’t going to take the job even though he said “Star Wars” was the first movie that “blew my mind” in terms of special effects.
Lucasfilm Chief Kathleen Kennedy has been courting Abrams, one of the most successful directors and producers in Hollywood, the creator behind “Lost,” “Fringe,” two “Star Trek” films, “Alias” and “Super 8.”
Michael Arndt is writing the screenplay and all other details are rumor at best.
