‘Star Trek Beyond’ video reveals ‘bigger’ phasers, retro look and Sulu’s daughter

2016 marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek as the original TV series premiered back in 1966, and that’s why Paramount Pictures wanted to make sure they got Star Trek Beyond in theaters this year, in part paying tribute to the late Gene Roddenberry’s creation. A new set visit to the U.S.S. Enterprise and interviews with the cast gives fans a little tease about details in the third rebooted film.

That turns out to be a little more difficult for Hikaru Sulu (John Cho), because he has a daughter at home waiting for him. In addition, the actor teased some kind of revelation about Sulu’s daughter that he wasn’t allowed to divulge in the Entertainment Tonight set video.

Karl Urban points out that the uniforms and ship interiors are a little more retro this time. But not everything has an older influence, because Chris Pine points out some bigger phasers, which he actually hadn’t even seen at this point in production.

In another set video, Pine doesn’t seem aware of any farewell to Spock Prime in the film, so it’ll be interesting to see if the character is addressed in the movie at all. He was quite integral to the plot of the first film in 2009 and then used again as a cheat to defeat Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness.

A cameo from William Shatner could make up for Nimoy’s absence, but the original Star Trek star has already denied that as a possibility.

Director Justin Lin takes over for the departed J.J. Abrams with Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto and Anton Yelchin all set to reprise their roles from the first two new films. Sofia Boutella joins the cast as a new alien with Idris Elba playing the film’s villain, Krall.

Star Trek Beyond arrives on July 22nd

Bigger phasers. Yeah, that’s what they’ve been missing. Cuz the little handheld ones that they used to be able to vaporize people with weren’t big enough?

  2. Emily reddom says:

I think that they should tell use more about what the movie is going to be about.
