An Army Specialist, Brittany Gordon, age 24, died alongside another soldier while serving in Operating Enduring Freedom. Gordon was a 2006 graduate of St. Petersburg High School.

The family gathered Sunday night at Gordon’s grandmother’s home to grieve and try to cope with their loss.

Police Chief Chuck Harmon said,  “This loss is devastating. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Gordon and his family during this time of unimaginable grief.

We know that the coming days will be extremely difficult and we will stand by ready to offer our support to Chief Gordon and his family in whatever manner possible.”

” I know that Chief Gordon was extremely proud of Brittany and all that she accomplished in her life.  Her life of service and especially service to her country stand as a testament to the type of person she was.”

“She was that go-getter,” said Sarah Thompson, Gordon’s grandmother. “Before she went in the service she had to lose weight. She did her running, her exercise…(and then) she said ‘yeah I made it, and she left.'”

Gordon’s body will be flown home in the next couple of days, the family says. From there, they will go ahead and make funeral arrangements.

Both Gordon’s mother and father are being accompanied by military officials on their way to Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Delaware, where they will be reunited with their daughter’s remains.
