Smoked salmon sold at Sam’s Club recalled due to possible listeria contamination
Miami, FL company, Multiexport Foods, Inc, announced an expansion of a recall instituted last week to include 12-ounce twin packs and 1.25-pound packs of the salmon sold under the “Paramount Preserve” brand after routine lab testing revealed the bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes, according to a WalMart product recall news release Wednesday.
Affected products were distributed to Sam’s Club stores between Nov. 12 and Dec. 21 in 42 states and Puerto Rico (see news release for specific lots of the affected product and the states affected).
No illnesses have been linked to the recall, which is “being issued with an over abundance of caution,” Wal-Mart said.
Listeriosis, a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, is an important public health problem. . The disease primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems. However, rarely, persons without these risk factors can also be affected.
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
Consumers who have purchased the 12oz Twin Pack or the 1.25 lb pack Paramount Reserve brand with the above LOT-SUBLOT-BATCH code should return it to their retailer for a full refund.
