Sleep Deprived? Choosing a Somtex Mattress Could Make a World of Difference

These days, everyone’s an expert on mattresses.

Your friends have their opinions. The blogosphere has its insights. Fitness communities weigh in with their thoughts. And yet while there seems to be an endless sample space of perspectives, very few of the recommendations or practical tips you receive are based on science.

Lest you run to your bedroom and set your new mattress on fire, you’ll be happy to know that science is quite decisive about the correlation between a well-chosen mattress and the quality of your sleep.

Replacing Your Old Mattress Decreases Stress, Back Pain

Though it was a small study, Oklahoma State University’s 2009 mattress study indicated that you can do a tremendous amount of good by changing out your mattress once it hits five years of use.

Researchers observed 59 people (30 women, 29 men) sleep on their old mattress for 28 days, then switched the subjects to a new medium-firm mattress for 28 days.

Over the course of four weeks on the new mattress, subjects showed a definitive decrease in stress and back pain.

These results led the researchers to conclude that new mattresses provide noticeable pain and stress benefits.

“Based on these data, it was concluded that, in this population, new bedding systems increased sleep quality and reduced back discomfort, factors that may be related to abatement of stress-related symptoms,” the study’s abstract reads.

While this study establishes a possible correlation between a new mattress and reduced stress and pain, it didn’t specify if varying grades of firmness affect the reduction in pain.

For that answer, you’d have to travel to the Mediterranean island of Mallorca.

Medium-Firm Mattresses Can Reduce Chronic Pain

An earlier study from the Kovacs Foundation, a Spanish research facility in Mallorca focusing on back pain, was published in the Lancet in 2003.

The team of 13 researchers observed 313 subjects for 90 days, randomly assigned each participant a firm or medium-firm mattress.

At the end of the three-month study, the subjects who slept on medium-firm mattresses experienced less pain than those who slept on firm mattresses.

“At 90 days, patients with medium-firm mattresses had better outcomes for pain in bed … pain on rising … and disability … than did patients with firm mattresses,” the study’s abstract said.

Where to Turn for Your Next Mattress? Try Casper or Somtex

While the research on the link between mattresses and sleep quality isn’t extensive, the existing research does seem to prove that the age and firmness of your mattress are important.

A pair of mattress companies – Casper and Somtex – offer multi-layer memory foam mattresses that could be a good fit for someone experiencing fitful sleep.
