‘Sicario’ is an Oscar worthy and thrilling looks at the war against Mexican drug cartels

One of the best films of the year and worthy of Oscar considerations is Sicario, a thrilling and violent examination of the war across the US-Mexican border. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Sicario pits Emily Blunt alongside a great cast which includes Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin.

Beginning in Arizona, Sicario traces the far reaching violence of the drug industry and Blunt’s idealistic Kate is recruited by a special task force seeking to target the drug cartel’s leadership with a mysterious and dangerous man named Alejandro (del Toro). Brolin’s role unfolds as the battles heat up and the layers of corruption rock Kate to her core.

Amazing performances, great sound and editing engage the audience from the beginning and never ease up off of the gas. Don’t miss the opening sequence because the explosion metaphorically launches Kate into this thrill ride, but those first few moments define her intensity and purpose.

The Flash star Victor Garber, The Walking Dead‘s Jon Bernthal and Maximiliano Hernández (Agent Sitwell in several Marvel films, the doctor on The Last Ship) all deliver great supporting role with Daniel Kaluuya playing Kate’s closest friend Reggie and making a big splash for future projects.

Like Zero Dark Thirty, Sicario challenges the morality of this fighting the drug war, blurring the rules of engagement and delivering the shocking reality of an unwinnable situation. As cold and callous as the film can feel, the true cartels are even more evil and violent than portrayed in the film.

Brolin’s Matt Graver is likable, but never becomes the friend we’d embrace or that Blunt’s character can fully trust. Kate (and the audience) is forced to face the dark reality that the drug cartels are winning, more and more American lives are at risk with an end no where in sight. The action sequences are thrilling, conflicts at the border and inside a secret tunnel are truly awesome.

Sicario emily bluntBlunt has delivered some good performances over the years with films like Looper, The Young Victoria and even, The Devil Wears Prada. Here, she raises her game and her character rides an intense rollercoaster giving the actress a chance to showcase her acting chops. From a confident leader to a broken victim and bowing to complete vulnerability, Blunt’s performance is fantastic.

Even in the final moments the audience is asked to question moral issues and how they would react if they were in the character’s shoes. A truly brilliant film from start to finish and expect Sicario to be considered for several Oscars.

Sicario receives 5 stars out of 5 stars

Sicario may not be for those who live in the land of “unicorns and rainbows,” choosing to block out the disturbing reality of our time, but Villeneuve has done his job of capturing the shocking chaos in a remarkable and entertaining film.
