Sens. Rand Paul and Mark Begich introduce legislation to encourage federal agencies to return unused funds
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK) introduced a bipartisan bill Thursday that encourages federal agencies to return unused funds to the taxpayer through bonus incentives.
The legislation is called “Bonuses for Cost-Cutters Act of 2013.”
“Federal agencies have no incentive to identify areas in the budget where savings could be found, due to the current law stating agencies are required to spend all of their allocated money before the end of the year. While agencies with surplus funds rush to spend the funds on frivolous and unnecessary purchases, our national debt continues to dangerously rise,” Sen. Paul said. “My bill would reverse the trend toward agency bloat, by eliminating waste fraud and mismanagement and creating surplus budget authority. ”
