SDCC 2014: New ‘Hobbit’ trailer details, new poster, how to say ‘Smaug’

San Diego Comic Con was the place to be for Hobbit fans and director Peter Jackson led the panel and debuted a new trailer for the final film in the series: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. The panel was hosted by Stephen Colbert, in full outfit from his cameo in Desolation of Smaug, and featured the stars Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel), Lee Pace (Thranduil), Benedict Cumberbatch (Smaug), Luke Evans (Bard), Graham McTavish (Dwalin), the mighty Andy Serkis, and co-screenwriter Philippa Boyens.

How to pronounce Smaug? Fun at SDCC Panel

A new poster was the buzz at the beginning of the convention – check it out below.

There was montage of footage from all of the Hobbit and LOTR films before the trailer began with Bilbo saysing “I’ll remember everything that happened. Those who survived, those who didn’t.”

There’s footage of Smaug blowing fire on Laketown, a decimated city, soldeirs and huge armies walking. Then, finally, Billy Boyd’s song from Return of the King begins, setting a somber, melancholy tone. It promises the defining chapter of the Middle Earth trilogy as fans see footage of a chase scene on ice, flashes of Sauron.

Then Bard asks Thorin, “Will you have peace or war?” He responds “I will have war!” A few more epic shots before everything gets quiet. Thorin “Will you follow me one last time?” closed it out before the title card.

Emergency Awesome posted a great video with a better POV than we had, so check those out below.

The highlight of the panel may ahve been the back and forth over pronouncing Smaug correctly. At first Andy Serkis pronounced it “Smog,” and Cumberbatch leaned over and whispered in his ear, to which Serkis quickly amended, “Sorry, Sm-owww-g.”

Peter Jackson thanked him for the amendment, but later, a reporter asking a question pronounced it “Shmowwg,” and Evangeline Lilly grabbed the mic to say: “Wait a minute. No one should ever listen to Peter Jackson on how to pronounce ‘Smaug.’ It isn’t ‘Schmowwg,’ it’s ‘Smowg.’ Right, Philippa?” To this, Philippa Boyens just shrugged.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will arrive in theaters on December 17, 2014
