SDCC 2014: ‘Agent 47’ trailer details, Zachary Quinto’s John Smith

The first trailer for Hitman: Agent 47 was debuted at Comic-Con with Homeland star Rupert Friend as the titular character from the popular video game franchise. Friend was absent from the event which showcased co-stars Hannah Ware and Zachary Quinto.

UPDATE: Agent 47‘s release date has moved back to summer – more details HERE

hitman-agent-47-rupert-friendQuinto is set to play the villain in the film and spoke to the packed hall about keeping the experience quiet.

“It’s hard to talk about projects like this. Obviously, you want to preserve the experience for the audience, but we want to give you guys something that you can actually write about. Basically, the story is a really large-scale, high-stakes action film, which is rooted in the relationships and the dynamics between these three characters that are played by Hannah [Ware], myself and our third and most important ally in this, Rupert Friend, who plays Agent 47.”

The Star Trek Into Darkness star elaborated on Friend, him shooting Homeland and his character.

“He’s shooting Homeland in South Africa, which we’re all really excited to see, but it prevented him from being there with us. It’s a real triangle. Basically, Katia is searching for someone and my character, John Smith, presents himself to her, in an effort to help her find who she’s looking for. But, nothing is what it seems with these people. All of us are serving agendas that are sometimes at odds with what we are presenting. It’s tough to be more specific than that because than the experience becomes jeopardized for the audience.”

On Smith, Quinto only said, “The character is more complicated than the name” and on the trailer he noted that “We saw bits and pieces in Berlin and Singapore when we were shooting it, but to actually see it put together like that is epic.”

The trailer opens to Voodoo Child and was fast-paced, car chase, rope darts and Agent 47 escaping handcuffs were some of the highlights. Ware is revealed wearing next to nothing and going for a swim in a rooftop swimming pool. Fans get to see the signature bar code on his neck and a get line: “He’s an engineered human being: stronger, faster, more intelligent than normal people.”

More of the analysis is below.

Hitman: Agent 47 is scheduled to be released on February 27, 2015.

From Total Film:

The trailer opens with a remixed version of ‘Voodoo Child’, with Friend’s antihero handcuffed to the table in an interrogation room. The back of his head (which is stubbly, as opposed to clean-shaven) bears the trademark barcode tattoo, albeit in a slightly redesigned form. Asked for his name, he answers, “47.” His interrogator retorts, “That’s not a name!” “No, but it is mine…”

The action kicks off when 47 shows off his Bourne-esque skills. Jumping up from his seat, he pulls his handcuff-chain into the line of fire of a rifle that’s been mounted on the table and pointed at him. All in slow-motion, naturally.

Also spotted in the trailer is 47 walking through a security gate metal detector, and drawing back his coat to reveal that he’s armed to the hilt with various guns, Matrix-style. A line of dialogue acts as the voiceover, intoning: “He’s an engineered human being: stronger, faster, more intelligent than normal people.”
