Scott Presler attacked as ‘right-wing extremist’ because of Baltimore cleanup

“I can’t even imagine what would cause a person to be mad at us for helping to clean up Baltimore. Instead of criticizing us, how about putting on some gloves to pick up trash,” tweeted Scott Presler, a self-proclaimed Trump supporter working “to defeat Hillary / If each of us registers 5 new Republican voters, Trump wins in 2020!”

The Real News Network covered the news in a video titled “Right-wing extremist organizes clean up in the West” and this description “Inspired by Trump, right-wing extremist Scott Presler organizes a “Clean Up” event in West Baltimore, but is this altruism or a political ploy for Trump?” –watch below.

This was how the Baltimore Sun began their coverage: “It made for good photos, compelling videos and catchy Twitter hashtags. A group of conservatives rolled their pickup trucks into one of West Baltimore’s most impoverished neighborhoods Monday for a cleanup day. Loaded down with trash bags and shovels, they cleared alleyways of old tires, food containers, paper and other debris. They pulled up weeds and cut away overgrown grass. The group posted before and after pictures on social media showing their progress.”

The Sun labels Presler an activist, a more fair adjective for the vocal Trump supporter.

“Call us skeptical,” The Sun writes as Presler says “the visit wasn’t about showing support or animosity for either man” referring to the media hyped verbal squabble between President Trump and Rep. Elijah Cummings.

In the wake of recounting Presler’s tweet of a photo of a newspaper found from President Obama taking office, 11 years later.

“Presler’s presence in Baltimore reinforces the tired image of our failing urban cores. That the poor people in this dilapidated city can’t take care of their own neighborhoods and all the public officials around them have failed as well. The bureaucratic, all-talk Democrats strike again. If a crowd of volunteers could clean up 12 tons of trash in 12 hours, how incompetent and helpless must Baltimoreans be if they can’t manage it in decades, right?” they write.

Clearly not seeing that they are proving Trump correct, they write: “Does Presler know that drug dealers use trash to hide their product and have been known to threaten people who try to clean it up? The solutions are just not that simple.”

“We also hope Mr. Presler keeps his promise to return to Baltimore once a month. It would definitely give his motives more credibility. It might also give him better perspective about the city’s problems than any single visit can provide. Maybe it could even lead him and his followers to advocate for federal housing, health care, transportation, education, criminal justice, civil rights and anti-poverty policies aimed at urban communities.”

“I was inspired by President Trump’s tweet. There was a lot of talking going on — everybody was whining, complaining. Nobody was actually doing,” Scott said on the Glenn Beck radio show. “I put out one tweet — just one tweet — saying, ‘I’ll go to Baltimore, even if it’s me on the street corner all by myself, and I’ll pick up trash.’ And that one tweet went viral, and people all across the country were saying, ‘Scott, how can I contribute? What can I do? How can I support your efforts?’ And so, I never thought that Monday was going to be a nationwide effort, but it truly was.”

Presler continued, emphasizing that “the people of Baltimore love their city” and praised the local people who jumped in to help the clean up effort.

“The city is forgetting its own people,” he added. “These are the forgotten citizens of Baltimore.”
