Although there is no evidence at this point that any of our consumers or products have been impacted, we are taking this action as a precautionary measure to assure that our products are safe,” said Paul Schwebel, the company’s president.

Schwebel said the possible problem was discovered during routine environmental testing at its Youngstown bakery. As a result, he said, the company immediately halted production at that bakery and alerted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the potential problem. The company also placed all product prepared for shipment on hold. None of Schwebel’s other bakeries are impacted.

The products were shipped directly to retail outlets, restaurants and institutions in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, New York, Michigan, West Virginia and Kentucky. Consumers can identify the products by the code located near the “best by” date. If the code begins with the letter “A,” the product is part of the voluntary withdrawal. Anyone who has products in their possession that are part of the voluntary withdrawal should not consume them and should discard them or return them to where they were purchased.

Schwebel said if consumers have any questions concerning the potentially impacted products they can contact them directly at 1-800-860-2867. Consumers may also visit Schwebel’s web site at Schwebels.com for more information. Schwebel Baking Company, founded in 1906, operates four bakeries in Ohio.

L. monocytogenes is a bacterium that can contaminate foods and cause a mild non-invasive illness (called listerial gastroenteritis) or a severe, sometimes life-threatening, illness (called invasive listeriosis). Persons who have the greatest risk of experiencing listeriosis after consuming foods contaminated with L. monocytogenes are fetuses and neonates who are infected after the mother is exposed to L. monocytogenes during pregnancy, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems.
