SC State Senator Lee Bright announces candidacy for US Senate, becomes the third contender for Lindsey Graham’s seat
South Carolina State Senator Lee Bright announced this morning he will officially begin his U.S. Senate run against Lindsey Graham, making him the third such conservative candidate to do so.
“I’m eager to get started” said Bright, adding that Tuesday’s announcement is “the first step towards bringing this nation back to its founding principles. Conservative Republican leaders all across South Carolina recognize that, which is why we’re inviting all of them to join me in this tele-town hall tomorrow morning.”
Bright, who represents Spartanburg in the state Senate, joins an already crowded field for next summer’s Republican primary. Other candidates include Richard Cash, a businessman and former congressional candidate, and Nancy Mace, a Charleston businesswoman and the first woman to graduate from The Citadel. Jay Stamper, who runs a Columbia-based non profit, has said he will challenge Graham as a Democrat.
Bright is garnering quite a bit of “Tea Party” and other grassroots support–Goose Creek Tea Party activist Joan Peters is just one example–“Senator Graham has shown himself to be part of the ruling elite who is more concerned with pleasing the Washington ‘in-crowd’ than representing the good people of South Carolina”, Peters said. “After the heartbreak of losing Senator DeMint, sending Lee Bright to Washington to work alongside Tim Scott is something we must do.”
It appears Sen. Graham has not made conservatives in his state very happy and he has a target on his back–there is even a grassroots campaign called “DefeatLindseyGraham”.
2014 is sure to be a wild election season.
