San Francisco Costco recalls nearly 40,000 lbs of rotisserie chicken due to salmonella risk

A San Francisco, California Costco has announced the recall of nearly 40,000 lbs of  rotisserie chicken products due to the potential of Salmonella Heidelberg contamination, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) recall release Saturday.

The store,  Costco’s El Camino Real store located at 1600 El Camino Real, San Francisco, Calif, recalled the following products:

  • 8,730 “Kirkland Signature Foster Farms” rotisserie chickens
  •  313 total units of “Kirkland Farm” rotisserie chicken soup, rotisserie chicken leg quarters, and rotisserie chicken salad

The above products were sold to consumers at that Costco location between Sept. 11 and Sep. 23, 2013.

This recall was initiated due to concerns about a group of Salmonella Heidelberg illnesses that may be associated with the consumption of rotisserie chicken products prepared in and purchased at the Costco El Camino Real store.

The FSIS says based on epidemiologic and traceback investigations that there is a link between the Costco El Camino Real rotisserie chicken products and the current multistate outbreak strain.

Consumers and media with questions regarding the recall should contact Costco at (800) 774-2678.
