Samaritan’s Purse airlifts supplies and relief to assist Philippines typhoon vicitms

PRESS RELEASE: A team from North Carolina-based Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse is already on the ground in the Philippines, working with local partners to coordinate and deliver desperately needed aid to victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Today, more relief will be on the way when Samaritan’s Purse loads some 110 tons (220,000 pounds) of emergency supplies onto a cargo jet at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

The emergency relief supplies include plastic sheeting for shelters, as well as filtration systems to help provide clean water for disaster victims. Additional relief supplies include thousands of blankets and mosquito nets, medical tents, medical supplies and generators.

In addition to the airlift, Samaritan’s Purse is currently working with local volunteers in Cebu City to assemble thousands of hygiene and food parcel kits for typhoon victims, which will be distributed this week on the Philippine islands of Cebu and Bantayan. Samaritan’s Purse relief teams in the Philippines say Bantayan was particularly hard hit by Typhoon Haiyan.

Medical assistance also arrives this week. Samaritan’s Purse flew in a team of doctors and nurses, along with medical supplies, to assist with the relief efforts.

Samaritan’s Purse has worked in the Philippines for more than 15 years, deploying disaster response teams and working through local partnerships. Last month the organization provided relief to residents during rebel fighting and after a deadly earthquake. In December 2012, Samaritan’s Purse responded to a typhoon in the Philippines that caused at least 1,900 deaths and widespread destruction.

Samaritan’s Purse is an international Christian relief and evangelism organization, headed by Franklin Graham. Based in Boone, N.C., Samaritan’s Purse responds to the physical and spiritual needs of individuals in crisis situations—especially in locations where few others are working. Samaritan’s Purse works in more than 100 countries to provide aid in the name of Jesus Christ to victims of war, disease, disaster, poverty, famine and persecution.
