The multistate Salmonella Heidelberg outbreak continues to grow according to the latest data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Friday.

As of October 11, 2013, a total of 317 persons infected with seven outbreak strains of Salmonella Heidelberg have been reported from 20 states and Puerto Rico.

Nearly three-quarters (232) of the cases are reported from California alone.

Since the last update on October 8, 2013, a total of 39 additional ill persons have been identified from 9 states and Puerto Rico: Arizona (2), California (19), Florida (2), Kentucky (1), Missouri (5), Nevada (1), New Mexico (2), Puerto Rico (1), Texas (4), and Virginia (2).

Following reports of the first cases of salmonella, the USDA did threaten to shut down Foster Farms last week. This would have affect two plants the company has in Fresno and another in Livingston, Calif.

That threat was lifted Thursday after Foster Farms met a deadline to show plans to improve conditions in the three problem plants. The USDA only cautioned consumers to ensure the poultry is cooked to a minimum of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

The CDC reports that seven strains of Salmonella Heidelberg have been included in this outbreak investigation, in which some are also reportedly antibiotic and multi-drug resistant.

To date, isolates collected from ill persons were resistant to combinations of the following antibiotics: ampicillin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, kanamycin, streptomycin, sulfisoxazole, and tetracycline. Antimicrobial resistance may increase the risk of hospitalization or possible treatment failure in infected individuals, the federal health agency reports.
