Robert Downey Jr talks ‘Captain America 3,’ Civil War confirmed, explains ‘Iron Man 4’

Robert Downey Jr has been confirmed for Captain America 3 in a divisive new storyline centering around the popular Civil War comic book story arc. Now RDJ talks about the role, sort of, but by proxy confirms his involvement and the direction of the franchises.

Civil_War_7 comic book coverAfter dodging direct questions about Cap 3, saying he would “just regret it,” the star of The Judge promised Yahoo! Movies UK “It’s going to be huge.”

Variety broke the news of having RDJ in the third Cap film as well as the Civil War story. This does align with the mixed messages over the lack of planning on an Iron Man 4 film and the role of Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier in the MCU.

Fans assumed the direction of the franchise was the death of Steve Rogers, but now the picture is much clearer (and exciting). The assassination of Captain America concludes the first phase of Civil War, so that may still be a piece in the puzzle.

As Variety details: “…the plot will pit Stark against Captain America’s alter-ego Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, as they feud over the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force for the authorities….Stark supports the program, but Rogers does not, saying it threatens civil liberties, causing sides to be taken and Rogers, among others, to go on the run to avoid arrest. The moral question and battle with his Avengers teammate essentially makes Stark a villain of sorts in Captain America 3,  providing Downey with a meaty role he could play out into future Marvel films, including a fourth Avengers.”

Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been rumored to be taking over for Joss Whedon and a tackle Avengers 3 and 4, which could arrive in back-to-back years. This will be a blockbuster Civil War themed film and then pulling the heroes back together to battle Thanos as he acquires the Infinity Stones and becomes the most powerful being in the universe.

While there are a lot of rumors and speculation here, fans can bank in Cap 3 arriving on May 6, 2016.
