Richard E Grant will be a new character in ‘Star Wars 9’

Fans are eagerly hoping for some Star Wars 9 details, an official title, poster or teaser — something.

Now, news comes that Richard E. Grant may simply be playing a new character in J.J. Abrams film, after much speculation when he was cast.

He claimed that “the room went upside down” when J.J. Abrams told him the name of the person he’s playing, prompting thoughts that he’d play  a familiar character, but now a newly published interview with Radio Times may suggest otherwise, with the actor claiming that the character is all his.

“I hadn’t thought of it like that, but the character is just mine!” Grant said when asked about the opportunity to leave his mark on a new character. “I don’t know about the action figure or whether there will be one, but this is pretty amazing.”

He continued: “I saw the first one when I was a 20-year-old drama student in 1977,” he explains, “So if you told me 41 years later I’d be in the final Star Wars, I would have said you were completely mad, it’s not possible. I was utterly astonished.”

Grant then explained Lucasfilm and all of the secrecy.

“Oh, it’s definitely worth it,” the actor said. “If you’re a Star Wars fan, and I am, then knowing what’s coming in this is quite something. I absolutely understand why they’re so secretive about it, because it’s very exciting.”

A popular prediction that he was playing Grand Admiral Thrawn of Timothy Zahn novels and Star Wars Rebels fame until Grant himself flatly denied the rumor last year.

Star Wars 9 stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Billy Dee Williams, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Carrie Fisher.

Also new to the franchise are Dominic Monaghan joins Keri Russell and Naomi Ackie.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
