Lee, age 26, gave her first interview since her boyfriend was charged with murder under the 2004 Unborn Victims of Violence Act.
Correcting the portrayal of “shock” when she discovered she was pregnant, to describe it as a “blessing,” Lee then explained how Welden took the news.
“Typical man. Very scared, negative. You know, questioning what’s going to happen. And, you know, it was going to be fine either way.”
Welden changed the label on a bottle to appear as though it contained antibiotics and then gave the woman Cytotec to induce the contractions which led to her losing the baby. More details here.
“… I gave them the medication and I said, you know, this is the amoxicillin I’d been taking and the pharmacist looked at me, this isn’t amoxicillin. And then I asked, well, you know, my boyfriend works here. He’s — no, he doesn’t work here. It was just one thing on top of another,” Lee explained the scene at the hospital.
Later she revealed her deepest pain: “Nothing will ever bring back what I’ve lost. Nothing will ever bring back Memphis.”
“Memphis Remington Welden.”
Welden, pleading guilty on lesser charges, faces up to 15 years in prison. Foster and prosecutor Stephen Muldrow jointly recommended 13 years and eight months. He’s scheduled to be sentenced December 5.
New Day airs weekday mornings from 6-9 a.m. ET on CNN.
