Read This before You Hire Self Storage Units

Be it for the long- or short-term, self-storage is a great way of putting away household or office belongings to free up much-needed space or during a transitory period. However, how to find a good self-storage service and the right way to pack your stuff in the storage unit is not very obvious.

There are a few additional steps you should take to make sure that your storage space is optimized and that your belongings are secure. Needless to say, you also want the process to be as smooth as possible. In this article, we share a few tips to help you with that.

Start your search early

Besides the reputation of the company, there are a number of other factors you need to consider when looking for the right self-storage facility for you. These include the rates, the size of the storage units and how conveniently it’s located among other factors. Starting your search and giving yourself enough time to search ensures the company you choose meets your requirements.

Use a reputable and reliable storage facility

When using self-storage services, you’re placing your trust in a third party. Whether or not the items you plan to store are of high value, it is imperative that you choose a storage company such as
storageplus.com.au that is well-known for its reliability. Don’t go for a storage company simply because it offers the cheapest rates. Do some homework on it by reading reviews from current and past customers. Referrals from friends, family and workmates can also be useful.

Take inventory of the items you plan to store

This is important because, first, it helps you figure out the size of storage for you and, second, it ensures you stay organized once you store everything there. That is not to say that you need a highly detailed list of all the items. A general overview of the items in your storage unit is good enough.

For instance, you can simply list the large items and the number of boxes in the unit. Just make sure that you label all the boxes appropriately. You’re not going to remember the contents of each box after a few months. In addition to making the process of packing and unpacking easier, labeling your boxes makes it easy in case you need to get something from the unit later on.

Avoid storing highly valuable items in your storage unit

It’s a well-known fact in the self-storage industry that if you can’t afford to lose something, then it’s not advisable to keep it in a self-storage unit. Your belongings are probably going to be fine and you need not worry, but there’s always the small risk of loss or damage. To be on the safe side, store your jewelry, house art, and family heirlooms among other valuables at an alternative location that’s highly secure.

Keeping these tips in mind will ensure that your household or office belongings are safe and that you have additional space in your home or office.
