Rapper Mos Def, aka Yasiin Bey, makes video to protest force feeding of Gitmo prisoners

Described as graphic footage, a new video by rapper Yasiin Bey, otherwise known as Mos Def, has revealed the standard operating procedure for force-feeding Guantanamo Bay hunger strikers may look and feel like.

Mos Def force feeding videoMore than 100 of the 166 detainees being held at Guantánamo are currently participating in a hunger strike that began back in February. More than 40 of those prisoners are being force-fed, according to the latest word from the U.S. Navy.

His experience was captured in a shocking four-minute film released by Reprieve Human Rights organization.

The Obama Administration has been force-feeding them, citing “the policy of the Department of Defense to support the preservation of life and health by appropriate clinical means and standard medical intervention, in a humane manner.”

In a further nod to the humane, it has decided, for the duration of Ramadan, to force-feed them only after sunset and before dawn.

Slate.com notes “It’s worth pointing out the obvious here: The video is a transparent work of advocacy. So when Bey begs for the exercise to be called off before it’s finished, there is little doubt that at least some degree of acting is going on. Then again, Bey’s cries are quickly answered, a luxury not afforded to those Gitmo detainees who refuse to give up their peaceful protest.”
