Randy Newman’s latest song ‘I’m Dreaming’ a satire full of ‘racism’

Some call it satire, some are insulted and offended by the lyrics of Randy Newman’s latest song, “I’m Dreaming.”

The award-winning songwriter, who supports President Obama, has weighed in on the role of race in the presidential election, releasing a satirical song on Tuesday poking fun at voters who long for the days when a white man was in the White House.

The song has the refrain “I’m dreaming of a white president” and is written from the point of the view of a voter who casts his ballot solely on the basis of race.

“I think there are a lot of people who find it jarring to have a black man in the White House and they want him out,” Mr. Newman said. “They just can’t believe that there’s not a more qualified white man. You won’t get anyone, and I do mean anyone, to admit it.”

Many critics don’t agree with Newman’s assessment of racism in America.

Talk radio host Glenn Beck took notice on his Wednesday broadcast, attacking Newman’s perspective as an indication of “those on the left.”

“These racist leftists, they really live in an America where little black Sambos is a still a place that we go to for pancakes in the morning. That’s really where we live (according to them)

Rolling Stone calls it “wicked” saying: “A startling satire reminiscent of some of his earlier cuts like “Rednecks” and “Political Science” – which took on racism and American jingoism, respectively, through the lenses of less-than-reliable narrators…”

Some Lyrics:

“I’m dreaming of a white President,” he sings, taking on the persona of a racist voter, “Just like the ones we’ve always had. A real live white man, who knows the score, how to handle money or start a war, wouldn’t even have to tell me what we were fighting for.”

”I’m dreaming of a white President/Just like the ones we’ve always had/A real live white man/Who knows the score/How to handle money or start a war/Wouldn’t even have to tell me what we were fighting for/He’d be the right man.”

“He won’t be the brightest, perhaps, but he’ll be the whitest. And I’ll vote for that.”

“I think there are a lot of people who find it jarring to have a black man in the White House and they want him out. They just can’t believe that there’s not a more qualified white man. You won’t get anyone, and I do mean anyone, to admit it.”
