Rand Paul assaulted in home, Rene Boucher arrested
Police detailed an assault case and arrest as Kentucky Senator Rand Paul was assaulted inside his own home in Bowling Green, Kentucky on Friday afternoon. The former presidential candidate suffered only minor injuries.
Kentucky State Police have arrested Rene Boucher, 59, identified as the assailant. Boucher was arrested and charged with one count of 4th degree assault – minor injury, intentionally assaulting Sen. Paul inside his home. Troopers confirmed that Paul did not go to the hospital.
Boucher was taken to the nearby Warren County Detention Center.
UPDATE: Rand Paul was attacked AT home, but NOT in his home. Dr. Paul was actually mowing his lawn moments before the attack. The assault left the Senator with 5 broken ribs: “has five rib fractures including three displaced fractures.” Paul calls it an “unfortunate event.” Paul reportedly told police that Boucher tackled him from behind.
Paul said that he and his wife, Kelley, “appreciate the overwhelming support after Friday’s unfortunate event. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.”
Boucher was released on a $7,500 bond on Saturday after spending nearly 24 hours in the facility. He faces a court date on Thursday.

Authorities launched an investigation, no reporting any clear motive for the attack.
“FBI is involved making sure it wasn’t politically motivated,” says Trooper Hodges, Public Affairs Officer, Kentucky State Police. WAVE reports that Boucher and Paul are neighbors.
WAVE’s Jobina Fortson tweeted that neighbors are saying that Paul and Boucher “had an ongoing feud.”
Officials for Sen. Paul’s office say that the former presidential candidate did not suffer any major injuries.
“Senator Paul was blindsided and the victim of an assault,” Kelsey Cooper, a spokeswoman for Paul, said in a statement to thehill.com. “The assailant was arrested and it is now a matter for the police. Senator Paul is fine.”
BG Daily News reported that Boucher “is a Bowling Green anesthesiologist and pain specialist who developed a product called Therm-a-Vest, a cloth vest partially filled with rice and secured by Velcro straps that is designed to relieve back pain by delivering heat directly to the areas of the back where most pain is felt.”
On Facebook Boucher is shown to be an advocate for gun control and healthcare reform.
