Questions to ask when boosting security at your business premises
Did you know that there were an estimated 4.8 million crimes committed against business premises in England and Wales last year?
With such a worrying statistic in mind, technology integration specialists GPS Installations poses these questions to ensure your property is protected:
- Are all windows and roof lights closed and locked? It is very easy to leave a window or roof light open – especially when you’ve been working on a hot summer’s day. However, a high proportion of thefts take place through open windows. Consider implementing a system where the last one to leave the workplace has to check that every window has been closed.
- Have you locked the door? This one may seem simple but you’ll be surprised how many people forget to lock a door when they are rushing around at the end of the day. If you’re forgetful, install an access control system — this technology automatically secures a door as soon as it closes.
- Is everyone in your premises accounted for? For this, a visitor management system is highly recommended. Ideal for businesses who have regular visitors, these systems enable you to accurately log and monitor every individual who is in your building at any one time.
- Do you have an alarm system set up and is it up to date? To answer this question, tick off the following:
- Appoint dedicated keyholders to your alarm system.
- Ensure that the system is regularly maintained as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Be sure to check that the system is in fully working order at least once a month.
- Are there any tools or materials lying in view around your property? These items are just inviting the attention of thieves, so be sure to lock them out of sight whenever they aren’t being used.
- Is the external area of your business premises well lit? Fail to light up the close surroundings of your property and you’re giving potential burglars the opportunity to commit a crime under the cover of darkness. A few external lights positioned strategically around your premises should be enough to deter many would-be thieves.
How advanced is your CCTV systems? This technology has come on leaps and bounds over the past few years. For example, do you know that you can now get CCTV cameras with smart tracking functions which will automatically monitor a vehicle or individual throughout their entire time inside a protected area of your business? There are also systems which can be networked, allowing you to watch your property from a PC, table or smartphone in HD quality.
