President Obama urges insurance companies to delay cancellations until after election

In a speech to respond to critics, President Obama spoke on the broken promise to Americans on keeping their insurance as the Obamacare rollout continues to be plagued with problems and complaints.

The speech follows an announcement that enrollment has only just topped 100,000.

“Yesterday, the White House announced that in the first month, more than a hundred thousand Americans successfully enrolled in new insurance plans. Is that as high a number as we’d like? Absolutely not. But it does mean that people want affordable health care.”

Obama then turned to the problems of the website.

“The problems of the website have prevented too many Americans from completing the enrollment process, and that’s on us, not on them. But there’s no question that there’s real demand for quality, affordable health insurance. In the first month, nearly a million people successfully completed an application for themselves or their families.”

Taking the blame for the failures, discussing a “grandfather clause” which would have enabled citizens to keep their insurance, the President took responsibility (away from Congress) for this not being implemented as he asked insurance carriers to delay cancelling policies for one year (which is after the 2014 election.)

“So state insurance commissioners still have the power to decide what plans can and can’t be sold in their states, but the bottom line is insurers can extend current plans that would otherwise be cancelled into 2014. And Americans whose plans have been cancelled can choose to re-enroll in the same kind of plan.”
