Police detail shocking murder of 9-year-old Matthew Hernandez, killed by father using a hatchet
A judge ruled a father should keep custody of his two sons just four months before the man killed one of the boys with a hatchet as he slept on the couch, sources reported Friday.
Sacramento police allege that the boy’s father, Phillip Raymond Hernandez, 36, is responsible murdering his nine-year-old son, Matthew Hernandez, as the boy’s great-grandmother looked on helplessly.
Hernandez was granted custody of the Matthew and his now-12-year-old brother in 2009 despite a startling history of violence and arrests and their mother claiming he was a dangerous man.
Police said that an initial investigation revealed that Hernandez went into the backyard of his home and grabbed a hatchet. He then broke a sliding glass door and found his son asleep on the couch. The other son was home, but harmed during the attack.
The hatchet was recovered at the scene. The deceased boy’s mother was out of California and is returning to Sacramento.
“There is no explanation for Hernandez’s unimaginable actions,” stated a police press release.
