Jordan Bey, 17, of Homewood, will serve at least 40 years, possibly up to the rest of his life, in prison.

According to deputy district attorney Ilan Zur, Bey and two men went to the busway at the Homewood Avenue station just before midnight on Oct. 8, 2013, looking for someone to rob.

Omar Islam, 21, was targeted and the group demanded his cell phone. Co-defendant Desmond Young then punched Islam in the face, while another man, Jequan Frierson, stood as a look-out. Zur explained that Bey shot Islam in the leg who then threw his phone.

Bey picked up the phone and walked over to the man and shot him six more times, the final one in the head. This entire incident was captured on surveillance cameras.

Bey was only sixteen at the time the crime was committed, so he was sentenced as a juvenile. Adults convicted of first-degree murder are required to serve life without parole.

The other two defendants are scheduled for trial next week, Zur said, but it is likely to be postponed.

CBS chronicled the incident when Bey was arrested:

Bey said he was visiting 20-year-old Desmond Young when another man referred to as “Blue” arrived. “Blue” was upset about a fight with his girlfriend, which resulted in him being kicked out of the house.

“Blue” then said they needed to rob someone so he could get money to stay somewhere. The three got on Facebook and when attempts to trick people failed, they decided to go to a nearby ATM and wait for someone to use it.

When no one showed up at the ATM, they moved on to the East Busway stop, where they saw Omar alone using his phone.

“Blue” kept watch while Bey and Young approached Islam. As they got close to Islam, Bey pulled out a gun and Young asked for him to hand over the phone saying, “I need you to give me the phone.”

Young and Islam began to fight over the phone and a black duffle bag. At that time, Bey shot Islam once in the leg. Islam then threw the phone into the street. Bey went to pick up the phone, but noticed Islam walking toward him.
