Patrick Stewart talks ‘X-Men Days of Future Past,’ new costume and leaving ‘Star Trek’ behind
Fans have missed Patrick Stewart and maybe his role in X-Men: Days of Future Past will be the signs of the times – a return to more acting.
“In science fiction and fantasy, you never say never,” Stewart said recently from his home in the New York borough of Brooklyn in a new May 21 Columbus Dispatch article.
“Wonderful as the Star Trek experience was, as life-changing as the experience of playing Jean-Luc Picard was,” Stewart said, “there proved to be certain handicaps to it as well. One of them was that you become so closely identified with a series and a character that some people are reluctant to see you as anything else, and I just didn’t want to attach another albatross around my neck.”
Stewart played the popular Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: Next Generation from 1987 to 1994 and then appeared in several films over the next eight years. Stewart sounds apprehensive about returning as Professor Xavier.
“It was Bryan Singer who persuaded me that there would be no albatross this time,” said Stewart, referring to the director of X-Men(2000), X2: X-Men United (2003) and Days of Future Past and the feel of the new film.
“Bryan said that it would be a completely different experience, and it has been. It has been always delightful.”
Days of Future Past is set far ahead in a dark future, when mutants are hunted and murdered.
“The situation is so bad, in fact, that the good professor is no longer wearing fancy suits and shirts and ties,” Stewart said. “I have, at long last, got my own superhero costume. We’re all in rather ominous-looking black leather, and I have one of those suits, too. I’ve got to tell you, it felt really good.”
