Pakistan polio total this year tops 2012 number, Cameroon reports a second case of polio

There are currently three polio endemic countries left on the planet–Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan. However, in 2013, only Pakistan has reported an increase in polio cases from the previous year, according to the latest data from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative this week.

Pakistan map CIAThe number of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases in Pakistan for 2013 (59) now exceeds the number of polio cases reported from Pakistan during the same time period in 2012 (54). Nigeria has reported half the cases (51/101) and Afghanistan one third (9/27) of cases compared to the same time period in 2012.

In Syria, the number of confirmed cases of the virus remains at 13.

The African nation of Cameroon is reporting its second case of WPV 1 this week. This follows a confirmed case reported in mid-October. Prior to October, the last case of polio reported from the country was in 2009.

The Horn of Africa polio outbreak was quiet during the past week as there were no new cases reported. The total for this outbreak remains at 201.
