Oklahoma Sen Candance Johnson quotes Genesis to defend legalization of marijuana

An Oklahoma senator quoted a scripture from the book of Genesis to back her claim that marijuana should be legalized in the state. Democrat Sen. Constance Johnson has cited Genesis 1:29 as a reason to legalize pot.

The scripture states, “Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.’” Johnson interprets the scripture to mean God made the plant so it should be legal for use.

“We’re putting forth Genesis 1:29 as the basis

of this campaign,” Johnson said. “God created this wonderful, miraculous plant and we know that is has been vilified for the last 100 years, and it’s time to change that in Oklahoma.”

A petition is currently going around Oklahoma to put the marijuana proposal on a state ballot. Under Johnson’s proposal, one ounce of marijuana would be legal for recreational use; three ounces would be permissible for medical use.

“We’ve experienced anything from downright disregard to ignoring us to telling us to, ‘Go to hell’ pretty much. And this is where we’ve had to go. We’re taking this to a vote of the people because we know the people of the State of Oklahoma, in spite of what the policymakers refuse to do, want to have a voice on this matter.”

“It’s just the right thing to do. It’s a God given plant and it could change the world,” said Johnson.

Johnson announced that she plans on running for Senate in a special election replacing Tom Coburn.
