Ohio mumps and measles cases continue to rise, Ohio House staffer infected with mumps

The vaccine preventable diseases of measles and mumps continue their spread in the Buckeye State, in fact, the later has made it’s way to the State House.

Statewide, the number of measles cases has grown to 35 cases, up from 26 less than a week ago. The following counties have reported cases–Knox (24), Ashland (5), Coshocton (2), Holmes (2), Richland (1) and Wayne (1). The confirmed and probable cases are between the ages of 1 and 50 years.  Of these cases, 17 cases are female and 18 cases are male. 

The Central Ohio mumps outbreak is now up to 318 cases, which now includes cases in Madison County. 188 cases have been linked to The Ohio State University outbreak, according to a Columbus Public Health press release today.

The central Ohio mumps outbreak now has more than half as many mumps cases as there were nationwide last year. For more infectious disease news and information, visit and “like” the Infectious Disease News Facebook page.

The mumps outbreak has even reached the Ohio House, according to a Columbus Dispatch report today. They report that Chief Administrative Officer, Kim Flasher sent a message to House lawmakers and staffers Sunday informing them that a House staff member has been diagnosed with the mumps and the contagion period is likely to last through most of this week.
