Obama’s skeet-shooting photo: Another distraction from the true purpose of the Second Amendment

Guns are the hot topic of the day.

This comes as no surprise, not so much because of the recent, tragic Newtown shootings, but because as the federal government grows exponentially and requires compliance from its citizens, an armed people clearly stands in the way from  absolute intrusion and control.

As the President released this photo of him skeet-shooting at Camp David, I see this as nothing more than a major distraction from the main argument in the debate…why the founders put the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights?

The President is clearly trying not to look overly anti-guns, and in the meantime, so called “conservatives” are wasting valuable time and verbiage criticizing the release of the photo. Now there is a back-and-forth between right wing websites calling out the President and left wing websites calling the right wingers “conspiracy theorists”.

Most pro-gun members of Congress who support the Second Amendment rarely do vocally for the reasons the founders included it.

The National Rifle Association is the same…hunting, self protection, sport, etc., but wishy-washy on the main purpose of the Second Amendment.

Mark Kelly, retired astronaut and Navy captain, and husband of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords who was shot two years ago was on Fox News Sunday this morning and said the following:

You know, I do agree that every American has the right to own a firearm, to protect himself, to protect his family, to protect his property. Gabby and I are both gun owners and I don’t think you’ll find a person stronger a supporter of the Second Amendment than me and I defended it with my life over Iraq and Kuwait.

You know, but this isn’t about the Second Amendment anymore. This is about public safety.

Benjamin Franklin clearly had a response to Capt. Kelly, if you know what I mean.

Again, that’s not what the Second Amendment is all about.

California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, who recently introduced the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 says “The legislation also protects the rights of law-abiding citizens who use guns for hunting, household defense or legitimate recreational purposes.”

I repeat…not the founders purpose.

Many, many distractions.

Strangely enough, the one individual who stated the purpose of the Second Amendment through the eyes of the founders was Democratic strategist Pat Caddell on Justice with Judge Jeannine Saturday night on Fox. Here Caddell said the Second Amendment was to protect the citizenry from the tyranny of their government (paraphrased by me).

Know who agrees with Mr. Caddell? How about Thomas Jefferson. The following quote is frequently attributed to out third president– “The most important reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, if necessary, at last resort to protect themselves from tyranny in government.”

George Mason said, “To disarm the people is the most effectual way to enslave them.”

“The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops.” – Noah Webster

In a recent Campaign for Liberty (C4L) email, C4L Chairman Ron Paul said the following:  “The Founders included the Second Amendment in the U.S. Constitution as a bulwark against tyranny – as a check against evil men wielding the sword of government to bloody the American people into submission.”

People who claim to be supporters of the Second Amendment need to focus on what the Founders said and stop getting distracted by things like Obama’s photo and watered down arguments for this critically important part of America’s history and law and listen to the founders.
