NYCC 2014: Stephen Amell talks ‘Arrow’ season 3, the death of main charcters
New York Comic-Con fans got a real treat having Stephen Amell onhand to discuss the third season of Arrow, just days after the intense premiere episode and the death of a major character.
Amell, addressing the death of Sara Lance/Black Canary at the close of the season three opening episode, says that “no one is a bigger Caity Lotz fan than I am.” Fans can expect to see more of the character in flashbacks, especially as Nyssa returns in the aftermath of her death.
Looking ahead to the ninth episode this season, Amell promises the show will “take cliffhangers to another level” and says a fight scene is the “biggest” they’ve ever done on the show. This will involve swords, not bows and arrows.
Malcolm Merlyn is back and Amell says “Merlyn is a very different person than John is by himself.” He added that acting with John Barrowman “has been one of…the highlights of this third season so far.”
Tension seems obvious when Oliver learns that his sister Thea has been hanging with the show’s supervillain – a topic Amell says fans can see coming. He adds that Laurel will continue to get direction, find a “definitive, set purpose” in season three.
He discussed how Laurel started “on the periphery,” but then was “brought into the fold,” and that she’ll have a major role to play in season three.
Amell talks about the emotions surrounding the death of Moira and Tommy, played by Colin Donnell, who made a surprise appearance. “I miss Tommy.” Amell says as he and Donnell hinted at a flashback sequence together.
With Arrow, The Flash, Gotham and more shows on the way, the actor said we’ve “entered a golden age of comic book properties on television.” Amell doesn’t view the show as “competition,” explaining that The Flash was already a widely popular and loved character. He also credited the same creators who are behind the success of Arrow.
Arrow airs Wednesdays on The CW at 8pm/7c
