Norway 7-Eleven ad for condoms warns of high chlamydia rates

While Norway is ranked as “The second happiest country” in the world, on criteria such as freedom, honesty, welfare, good health, and generosity, according to the Dept of Tourism, 7-Eleven Norge is letting visitors know about the chlamydia situation in the country in a new condom ad (see below).

The 43 second picturesque advertisement has the following text:

“Norway. Land of the fjords, the mountains, the midnight sun, and chlamydia. Norway has one of the highest rates of chlamydia in Europe. Visiting from abroad? Protect yourself against the locals! Get your condoms at 7-Eleven.”

To make matters worse for the Dept of Tourism, the convenience chain has placed a poster ad in strategic places around Oslo where tourists might see, like in the train station.

So how bad is the chlamydia situation in Norway?

According to a European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) 2015 Epidemiology Report on the sexually transmitted infection, Norway reported more than 25,000 confirmed cases.

Only the UK, Sweden and Denmark reported more cases in 2015. Only Iceland and Denmark had a greater rate–Norway saw 488 cases per 100,000 population.

Genital chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium. Sexually active young people are most at risk of chlamydia, and women below 24 years of age have the highest number of infections in Europe.
