NJ.com fact checks Chris Christie on GOP debate claims

During Wednesday’s GOP President debate on CNN New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie plugged his record on national security, tax cuts, drug treatment and planned parenthood funding. Now NJ.com responded to clarify the governor’s record.

CNN host Dana Bash asked Christie if Republicans in Congress surrendered on the Planned Parenthood funding debate.

“We didn’t surrender in New Jersey. Six years ago, as the brand new, first-ever pro-life governor of New Jersey since Roe v. Wade, I defunded Planned Parenthood. And I vetoed Planned Parenthood funding now eight times in New Jersey. Since the day I walked in as governor, Planned Parenthood has not been funded in New Jersey. We stood up, and every one of those vetoes has been sustained.”

NJ.com says “Christie might be stretching the numbers, but the gist of the claim is true.”

  • Christie eliminated $7.5 million for women’s health services in 2010
  • Budget cuts were from a “variety of health centers, including some run by Planned Parenthood”
  • Six of 58 family planning clinics closed followed the budget cut
  • Christie said he cut the millions of dollars because the state couldn’t afford it and the services could be found elsewhere
  • Christie has twice vetoed bills to expand Medicaid to more women seeking family planning services
  • Christie said it would be financially irresponsible to spend more on a program already running a $1 billion deficit

Their summary: “In declaring he’s vetoed Planned Parenthood funding eight times, he appears to be conflating his opposition to the Medicaid expansion with the annual budget line-item vetoes.” (Emphasis added, The Dispatch)

Christie claimed he has vetoed 400 bills from a “crazy liberal Democratic legislature,” and he’s yet to be overridden.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported last month that Christie has issued 398 vetoes, noting that the Americans for Tax Reform’s assertion was based to some extent on a Google search. (Emphasis added, The Dispatch)

“Look at the number of budgets with tax hikes he has vetoed: all of them,” the group’s state affairs manager told the Inquirer. “Then you get the number of times Garden State Dems succeeded in screwing taxpayers with a greater tax burden: zero… Then use Google to examine what other governor in modern history has saved their state from as much crap as Trenton Dems have demanded instead of government reform: zero.”

The analysis noted the exchange with Rand Paul over the use of federal authority against marijuana, “…he would put you in jail. If a young mother is trying to give her child cannabis oil for medical marijuana for seizure treatment, he would put her in jail if it violates federal law,” Paul stated.

“Christie pushed back, drawing a distinction between his approach to medical and recreational marijuana,” the article noted.

“In New Jersey, we have medical marijuana laws which I supported and implemented,” Christie said. “I’m not against medical medical marijuana. We do it in New Jersey. I’m against the recreational use.”

  • Christie has called the laws in Jersey a “flawed medical marijuana law, and implemented the program reluctantly and slowly.”
  • only three of six dispensaries are open since the law passed as patients and their advocates have accused the governor of delaying the program
  • Christie “made some modest changes to expand the law in 2013, but has resisted other requests, calling them a push toward legalization for recreational users.”

“I am done expanding the medical marijuana program under any circumstances,” Christie said in 2013. Here’s what the advocates want: They want legalization of marijuana in New Jersey. It will not happen on my watch, ever.”

When discussing Social Security, Christie stated that “Harvard and Dartmouth said that Social Security is going to go insolvent in seven to eight years.”

NJ.com says “Christie’s claim appears exaggerated.” (Emphasis added, The Dispatch) and they stated:

Social Security’s 2013 Trust Fund Report projected that the combined retirement and disability fund will be exhausted in 2033. When that happens, taxes collected from workers that year will cover just 77 percent of benefits due at that time.
