New ‘Men in Black’ film set for June 2019 against ‘John Wick 3’ and a ‘Shaft’ remake

Sony has moved its summer 2019 Men In Black project from May 17 to June 14, setting it up against John Wick: Chapter Three and Warner Bros’ Shaft remake.

The Untitled MIB film has been fast-tracked from a script by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum (Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight).

The film is being produced by Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald and will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

Way back in 2015, producer MacDonald hinted that this project would be centered on a female lead, although that was before Marcum and Holloway boarded the project. There are rumors, which make perfect sense, that they are reportedly approaching this in the same vein as the Jurassic Park franchise, which keeps the universe intact but features new characters.

All were involved in the original franchise launched in 1997 with Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. The film became an instant box office hit and spawned two other films, grossing $589 million worldwide.

Sony found success with their Jumanji sequel and as Screen Rant noted that studios can be seen “slowly moving away from ’80s remakes and towards ’90s sequels. After all, the ’90s is a period of time that hasn’t been fully exploited yet with regard to nostalgia.”
