Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures and director Gareth Edwards have confirmed that a new Godzilla film is headed to theaters in 2014. Edwards, director of “Monsters” will helm the project based off of a script by David Callaham, who wrote both of the “The Expendable” films.

Warner’s statement says they “will return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner.”
“Godzilla” will land in theaters on May 16, 2014, days ahead of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot and the chapter in the Apes franchise “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” from 20th Century Fox.
While the 1998 “Godzilla” starring Matthew Broderick was a box office success, earning over $375 million worldwide, but was widely criticized the critics and fans who clamored for the traditional Godzilla design and not the radioactive giant iguana laying eggs in New York.
Warner Bros was also confirmed as the distributor for the film, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd. The tent pole film is expected to be presented in 3D.
