New Gallup survey: Economy, jobs are top issues for votes, GOP getting the edge
A pair of new surveys from Gallup show what’s important for voters and who they feel may have the edge heading into the 2014 midterm elections.
“The Republicans in Congress hold significant leads over the Democrats on four of the six issues that U.S. registered voters say are most important in determining how they will vote in November: the economy, the way the federal government is working, the situation with Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria, and the federal budget deficit. Democrats, by contrast, top their Republican rivals on just one of the six: ‘equal pay for women.'” the new article begins.
Moreoever, “Fifty-two percent of Americans say they expect the Republican Party to win in the U.S. Senate, while an even larger majority, 63%, say Republicans will retain their majority in the House of Representatives.”
The 13 issues measured in the new poll include eight that appeared in a Gallup Poll conducted in April, before the midterm campaign season came into full bloom, plus five new ones. In total, six issues were rated above the average of 69%, in terms of the percentage of voters saying they are extremely or very important to their vote:
- the economy (88%)
- the availability of good jobs (86%)
- the way the federal government is working (81%)
- the situation with Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria (78%)
- equal pay for women (75%) and
- the federal budget deficit (73%)
On the No. 1 issue, the economy, Republicans have more than doubled their April lead over Democrats, to 11 percentage points.
“Partisans on both sides show signs of wishful thinking when assessing which party will win control of the U.S. House and Senate this fall. Nearly two-thirds of Democrats interviewed in the Sept. 25-30 survey say their own party will win the Senate — not an unreasonable conjecture given that Democrats currently control the upper chamber and would need to lose a net of six seats to lose the majority. But the slight majority of Democrats, 51%, also believe their party will win in the House — an outcome out of step with the Republican gains most pundits are expecting.”
