Neocons attempt to blast Rand Paul filibuster

If your last name is Paul, be sure there is a group “on the right” that are going to despise you regardless of what you do. This became clear after the 13-hour filibuster by Rand Paul last week when son of the “father of neoconservatism”, Bill Kristol  called Paul the “the spokesman for the Code Pink faction of the Republican party” in a Weekly Standard column Friday.

Kristol, David Frum, Charles Krauthammer, the Wall Street Journal editorial board, Sen. Lindsey Graham and Sen. John McCain are part of a group that ridicule the question, “Is it constitutional to order a drone strike on an American citizen who is not an imminent threat on American soil without due process?”

A serious, albeit hypothetical question concerning civil liberties is ridiculous?

Graham said, “The drone program he [Obama] has utilized overseas, I think has made us safer. This idea that we’re going to use a drone to attack an American citizen in a cafe in America is ridiculous, and I think the American people need to understand the threat we face.”

Exactly, said Senator Paul on the Glenn Beck program, “I agree it’s ridiculous, but then why didn’t the president say he won’t?” A simple answer to a simple question.

However, Charles Krauthammer made a funny on the weekend political show, “Inside Washington”, “Well look, I am grateful he raised this issue, because I think we have reached a point in the country where we are sick and tired of the way the administration is going around blowing people to kingdom come while sitting in their living rooms because of a suspicion  — I’m talking about Americans,” Krauthammer said. “Just last week, my neighbor was blown away during a chicken barbecue by his pool.”

Why is trying to protect civil liberties so offensive or ridiculous to this group of “conservatives?”

What is wrong with finding common ground with people of groups that are ideologically different like Code Pink?

What Rand Paul did Wednesday was enormously important in keeping a check on the Executive branch of the government. Thank goodness someone is standing up for civil liberties.
