Nebraska Cyclospora case count rises to 63

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) along with local health departments continues it’s investigation into the outbreak of Cyclospora.

As of July 19, the DHHS is reporting 63 cases, up 10 cases from the last update three days earlier.

“We’re hoping to find the outbreak is limited in duration and scope and this is an encouraging sign,” said Dr. Joseph Acierno, Chief Medical Officer and Director of Public Health for DHHS. “We are still working to locate the exact source of the outbreak and will remain vigilant in investigating newly reported cases.”

Cyclospora is a rare parasite that can cause gastrointestinal illness. The illness occurs when a person has food or water contaminated with the parasite. Fresh vegetables or fruits are often linked to Cyclospora outbreaks.

In interviews with Nebraskans who contracted the illness, vegetables appear to be the cause of the outbreak.  Locally grown produce is not part of this outbreak.

The latest numbers in Iowa stand at 109 confirmed cases, according to a health department status update today.

Listen to my interview with Dr. Patricia Quinlisk, Iowa Dept. of Public Health Medical Director and State Epidemiologist, to discuss the Cyclospora outbreak in Iowa, on Dispatch Radio tomorrow morning.
