Nancy Pelosi says Trump’s immigration plan is ‘scaring the children of America’
President Trump’s immigration plan, which continues the Obama era policy to deport hundreds of migrant families from across the nation is “scaring the children of America”, according to House Democrat Nancy Pelosi.
“When I saw that the president was going to have these raids — I mean, it was so appalling,” Pelosi said at the Elmhurst Hospital Centre in the New York borough of Queens. “It’s outside the circle of civilized human behaviur to just be kicking down doors, splitting up families.”
She added: “When I spoke to the president, ‘I said look, I’m a mom, I have five kids, seven, nine grandchildren and children are scared, you’re scaring the children of America, not just in those families but their neighbors and their communities’.”
Trump said on Twitter that immigration officers were planning to make mass arrests starting next week, a move which had been delayed as ICE and other border security officials finalize a strategy and plan to work with local law enforcement to coordinate.
“Next week ICE will begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States,” Trump tweeted. “They will be removed as fast as they come in.”
A total of ten cities where the raids were due to take place were identified, among them Miami, Los Angeles, Baltimore and Chicago.
Axios performed an analysis and found that the Trump administration has deported less illegals that the Obama administration.
“Under the Obama administration, total ICE deportations were above 385,000 each year in fiscal years 2009-2011, and hit a high of 409,849 in fiscal 2012. The numbers dropped to below 250,000 in fiscal years 2015 and 2016…
“Under Trump, ICE deportations fell to 226,119 in fiscal 2017, then ticked up to over 250,000 in fiscal 2018 and hit a Trump administration high of 282,242 this fiscal year (as of June).”
