Muslims attack Christians and Hindus in Bangladesh in wake of election
In the wake of a new election, Muslims are attacking Christians and Hindus.
The re-election of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League earlier this week is being called a farce by many. Opposition parties boycotted the election, as they believed it to be unfair.
Police officials reported violence in many parts of the country as opposition activists hoping to foil elections clashed with officers.
Police in some areas told CNN they fired tear gas and shots at protesters who tried to attack polling stations.
The capital of Dhaka was largely peaceful, but voter turnout was low.
Muslim extremists are targeting Christian villages with “big knives” and “lethal weapons” says the International Christian Concern group.
Muslims attempting to aid or protect the Christians have been attacked and injured.
Corey Bailey, ICC’s Regional Manager for Asia, said “It is clear that violence against Christians, at the hand of militant and radical Islamists, is becominga frequent occurrence in Bangladesh.”
“The political violence has been for three months. The government needs to give us stability,” Atiqul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association’s export bureau, said Friday from Dhaka.
