‘Mowgli’ trailer confirms the ‘darkest telling’ of Kipling’s classic

Disney will have to share the Jungle Book legacy as Mowgli by Andy Serkis is also based on Rudyard Kipling’s 19th Century tale of the man-cub that grew up among animals of the jungle in India.

The first trailer reveals that every effort has been made  differentiate the movie from the previous adaptations of Kipling’s work. The recent one being Disney’s 2016 blockbuster The Jungle Book generated $966 million at the box office worldwide.

Check out the trailer below.

Billed as the “darkest telling” of the classic, Mowgli features an amazing voice cast: Andy Serkis as Baloo, Benedict Cumberbatch as the man-eating tiger Shere Khan, Cate Blanchett as the manipulative snake Kaa, Christian Bale as Bagheera, Matthew Rhys as John Lockwood and Rohan Chand as Mowgli.

“This is trying to delve into Kipling’s book and the journey for Mowgli as an outsider, as an other, trying to find his identity,” said Serkis at the CinemaCon last month.

The film also stars Naomie Harris, Freida Pinto, Peter Mullan, Jack Reynor, Eddie Marsan and Tom Hollander.

“Kids are so sophisticated,” Serkis continued, “and that is why our Jungle Book is quite dark. … It’s a story of an outsider, someone who is trying to accept the laws and customs of a particular way of living and then has to adapt to another culture, a human culture, which of course he should be able to adapt to, because this is what he is. So it’s about two different species and their laws and customs, and neither are entirely right.”

Jungle Book: Origins arrives in theaters on October 19, 2018.
