Minnesota Rep Ilhan Omar calls for defunding Homeland Security, heats up #Not1Dollar movement

On Friday, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar called for the complete defunding of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which would eliminate numerous government agencies that protect the United States in a post-9/11 era.

“When Democrats stood our ground last month, we proved that Individual 1 does not have the public support to ram his hateful wall through Congress,” Omar tweeted. “Let’s stand firm: #Not1Dollar for DHS.”

Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib tweeted: “ I stand w/ my sister squad in leading the fight to stop increased spending for DHS. We are paying $700/day per child to cage them in inhumane facilities. No more family separation & detention!”

The claim is that they DON’T want to defund the whole agency (as the #Not1Dollar sounds like it implies): “Ohh the lengths the right will go to smear me… , , and I are calling for more in new funding for Trump’s abuses under DHS. So of course Fox “News” says I want to defund the whole Department! Anything to discredit and vilify us.” – Omar tweeted Sunday afternoon.

Completely defunding DHS (about $45 billion annually) would end the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), United States Secret Service (USSS), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Management Directorate, Science and Technology Directorate, Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office, Office of Intelligence and Analysis, and the Office of Operations Coordination.
