MGM announces new ‘Addams Family’ animated film in 2019 starring Oscar Isaac

MGM has slated its animated The Addams Family feature film for the Halloween month in 2019. The film, which is based on the macabre clan made famous by cartoonist Charles Addams, will be directed by Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, Monsters vs. AliensSausage Party). Star Wars: The Last Jedi star Oscar Isaac is in talks to voice Gomez Addams, the family’s patriarch.

Cinesite Studios will provide animation and digital visual effects for The Jackal Group CG feature The Addams Family, which has been in the works the past four years. The screenplay is from Pamela Pettler with revisions by Matt Lieberman.

Variety notes that “…The rest of the cast for “The Addams Family” has not been unveiled” but technically, nothing, not even Isaac’s involvement, is official.

“The announcement comes seven weeks after MGM and Annapurna Pictures unveiled a new joint venture for theatrical distribution in the U.S. Through this joint venture, MGM expects to release approximately six to eight films per year beginning with Eli Roth’s re-imagining of “Death Wish,” starring Bruce Willis with a March 2 release.”

The Addams Family became a television show in the 1960s that starred John Astin and Carolyn Jones, an animated series in the early 1970s, and two movies in the early 1990s starring Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, and Christina Ricci.

The characters were Gomez and Morticia Addams, their children Wednesday and Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandmama, the butler Lurch, the disembodied hand Thing, and the hairy Cousin Itt.

The Addams Family will arrive in theaters on Oct. 11, 2019.
