Melbourne Vietnamese restaurant linked to salmonella outbreak
A salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 21 people, including two pregnant women, has been linked to popular Vietnamese restaurant in Melbourne’s inner west, according to a Herald Sun report.
Authorities with the Victoria health department say the outbreak has been confirmed associated with Hao Phong on Hopkins St in Footscray .
The Maribyrnong City Council says the owners have closed the Hao Phong restaurant in Footscray while food safety officers investigate.
Mayor Grant Miles says the restaurant will not reopen until the council is satisfied food handling procedures are being followed properly.
Food cooked at the restaurant was taken away for testing and all implements that had come into contact with contaminated food were destroyed.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, which may be bloody. Most infected people recover within a week; however, some may develop complications and require hospitalization. Infants, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at highest risk for severe illness.
