Max McLean interview: C.S. Lewis, ‘The Great Divorce’ and bringing spiritual warfare to the stage

Max McLean starred in the stage adaptation of The Screwtape Letters and now returns with another C.S. Lewis classic – The Great Divorce. Max took out time to preview this amazing work, the power in Lewis’ words and what audiences can expect.

The Great Divorce cast photoTalking with Dispatch Radio Max dives into the greatness of Lewis, explaining the journey from “Hell to heaven” on a bus ride that challenges the audience’s spirituality, their desire to separate themselves from sin and examine spiritual warfare for themselves.

“In C.S. Lewis’ THE GREAT DIVORCE veteran Broadway actors bring some of Lewis’ quirkiest, hopelessly flawed but still worth redeeming characters to life on stage in 90 humorous, witty and enchanting minutes,” the official website states.

McLean compares the journey to a “twilight zone” experience which is “entertaining” as he and Brandon discuss the satire, imagery and the life after death questions.

Max performed The Screwtape Letters over four hundred times and contrasts the experience with The Great Divorce: the former is from the demon’s perspective and Divorce is from the POV of the spirit.

One of the most appealing aspects of talking with Max is his honesty and transparency about his love Jesus Christ – “I’m a sinner saved by grace.”

The Great Divorce opens in Tampa Friday 9/26 8 p.m. and then Sat. 9/27 4 p.m. & 8 p.m.
