Maryland shooting: Charlotte Zaremba dead, mom hurt, teen gunman in critical condition
A Maryland teenage girl was killed and her mother wounded in a triple shooting at a home in Ellicott City early Sunday morning, Howard County police said. Charlotte Zaremba was fatally shot and her mother, Suzanne Zaremba, injured when a teen boy attacked the girl in her bedroom.
Charlotte, 16, died at the hospital while her mom was treated and released. The 15-year-old gunman is in critical condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center after shooting himself in the head.
Howard County Police Department say Suzanne responded to a “scuffle” she heard in Charlotte’s bedroom Sunday morning to find the teen boy attacking her daughter, and shot at the mother, “and then the girl, and then himself.”
Another family member was home at the time of the shooting, but was in another area of the house and was not injured. Police are continuing to investigate.
Charlotte Zaremba was a sophomore at Howard High School.
“She just always was smiling, and she was always happy, and I don’t know, she was just like really sweet and a good friend,” Isabella Kushner said. Kushner told WUSA 9 she and Charlotte were martial arts sparring partners for a little while. Kushner’s father, Brian, was their instructor.
“She was quiet but, you know, strong-minded it’s just, this is really sad. This is uh, it’s devastating. I don’t know how to put it into words,” said Brian Kushner.
Howard High School principal Nick Novak said student services staff and members of a crisis team would be available to in need of additional support when students return to class Monday morning.
