Marvel News: ‘Doctor Strange 2’ release date, ‘The Eternals’ cast, ‘Black Widow’ villain

Looking ahead to Marvel’s phase four of films, here’s a few updates/rumors for Doctor Strange 2, The Eternals and

Marvel has set three release dates in 2021, including February 12th, May 7th, and November 5th, but no films have officially been tied to a particularly date.

Doctor Strange 2

The Benedict Cumberbatch led sequel was certainly a no-brainer once Marvel locked in the Sherlock star to essentially replace Robert Downey Jr. as a central figure for future films to revolve around since the Iron Man star’s contract is ending.

Doctor Strange 2 landed screenwriter C. Robert Cargill with an eye on a May 2021 release.

Now rumors and reports out of CinemaCon has the film arriving earlier, November 6, 2020 date, which most analysts were suggested would go to the Chloe Zhao-directed The Eternals.

Though unofficial, Deadline reports that when it comes to the two 2020 release dates, “rumors have been that it’s Black Widow standalone movie and Doctor Strange 2.”

Co-star Benedict Wong was previously under the assumption the production began filming this year, which would point to an earlier date and a ton of work was rumored to be done with director Scott Derrickson.

Marvel Exec Kevin Feige had said out about the film during his talk with Cinema Blend.

Strange, you know, whenever we do another Strange one, which we will do, it will be a number of years from the first Strange, and yet he’s a very big part of [Avengers:] Infinity War. So it is just a good problem to have when you have too many beloved characters that people want to see more of, whilst keeping to our core belief that we need to keep exploring nuance and keep doing different types of things.

Rachel McAdams is also “likely” to return as Strange’s love interest, after not getting much time in the first film. Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) was teased in the credits scene and plays a key role as an antagonist to Strange in the comic books, so expect Ejiofor back in some way.

Nightmare rumored to be key villain in ‘Doctor Strange 2’

Derrickson said of the villain: “Possibly Nightmare, but he’s a tricky villain to get right,” Derrickson wrote. “And you can’t tell the story of Doctor Strange w/out eventually dealing w/Clea.”

“Kevin [Feige] made a very cogent case,” he continued. “The trouble with starting with Nightmare is getting across the idea of the Dream Dimension as another dimension. The movie was challenging enough. It’s already an exposition-heavy movie… Dormammu made the most sense. And he is the most present villain in the comics.”

The Eternals

Angelina Jolie is finally joining a superhero movie, Marvel’s The Eternals.

Jolie is just a big name star atop a big list of stars already attacked to film and is rumored to be playing the ultra-powerful Eternal Sersi. She will play Sersi, “a more outgoing Eternal who has not been afraid to move amongst humankind.”

THR reports that Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Silicon Valley) is also in negotiations to come aboard.

Jack Kirby created the title in 1976 influenced by such works as Chariots of the Gods, which explored ancient gods as aliens.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that one aspect to the story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi.

Matthew and Ryan Firpo penned the script, helmed by The Rider director Chloe Zhao.

On this film Feige said: “Everything after Endgame, and after Spider-Man: Far From Home, will be different and be unique, as we try to make every film. But seeing returning characters is certainly something we’re gonna do and want to do. But also introducing characters that the majority of the world has never heard of, much like Guardians, much like Avengers before we made Avengers. And there are lots of them. Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people. You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”

The film has sparked some controversy as it is rumored to add the first LGBT character to the MCU.
While chatting to io9, Feige dodged a question about the arrival of LGTBQ theme.

“Well [the rumours are] accurate in that we’ve talked about [it for] a long time,” he said. “You look at the success of Captain Marvel and Black Panther. We want the movies to reflect the audience and we want every member of our global audience to see themselves reflected on the screen.”

Promising greater onscreen representation, Feige added: “That’s what we’ve been doing for a long time. And certainly, that’s what we’re focusing on going forward.”

Black Widow

Marvel Studios has cast British star of stage and screen O-T Fagbenle in the Black Widow solo film as the villain.

Although his role is described only as a “leading” one, it seems that Fagbenle will be the antagonist against Scarlett Johansson’s Romanoff, alongside a cast that already includes a Florence Pugh (Lady MacBeth), David Harbour (Stranger Things, Hellboy) and Rachel Weisz (The Mummy films, Oz the Great and Powerful).

Aussie director Cate Shortland (Lore) who will be working from a script by Jac Schaeffer (who contributed to this year’s smash Captain Marvel and will serve has showrunner for the the Vision and the Scarlet Witch limited series for Disney+).

Fagbenle stars on Hulu’s hit series The Handmaid’s Tale, portraying Luke Bankole, the husband of Elisabeth Moss’ June Osborne (AKA Offred) before the formation of Gilead, and the father of her child.

Black Widow is a prequel, likely set during the U.S.S.R. battle with the U.S. during the Cold War. There is no concrete release date yet, but next year is very likely.
